A new industry survey by Ovation Data highlights a growing concern: large volumes of geological and geophysical (G&G) data remain undigitised, fragmented, and at risk of being permanently lost.
Among the 213 geoscientists who responded:
- 82% expressed concern about permanent loss of legacy G&G data.
- 66% warned this could have significant business impacts.
- Only 27% reported having more than 90% of their data digitised and accessible
The findings expose major barriers including limited budgets, lack of internal resources, poor metadata, and insufficient leadership prioritisation
Respondents also raised the alarm about the loss of institutional memory as experienced professionals retire or change roles, leaving critical knowledge undocumented.
At EAGE, we see this issue as central to the future of our community. Clean, structured, and accessible data is the foundation for AI, digital transformation, and informed decision-making across energy, mining, and the geosciences.
That is why this year’s EAGEDigital.org event will place the spotlight on data stewardship and digitisation. We invite you to join peers, service providers, and technology leaders to share solutions and strategies for safeguarding irreplaceable data.
